When I moved to Bristol back in the winter of 2013, I had no idea that there would be so many wonderful events and festivals available across the city all year round. Now, after well and truly having planted my roots here, I can very honestly say that the International Balloon Fiesta is without doubt Bristol’s best event EVER…and one I get excited about every summer!
This year, the four fabulous days of fun will run from 10th – 13th August and will attract over 150 hot air balloons from across the globe. Partnered by Bristol Energy, the fiesta will take place as always within the beautiful Ashton Court grounds and is completely free for all to attend.
The fun will start at midday on the Thursday with all balloons being tethered within the launch field. The first mass ascent will then be at 6pm before the Nightglow and firework finale at 9pm (for those of you who are new to the fiesta, the Nightglow involves 25 of the huge balloons glowing in time to a specially commissioned musical soundtrack and is great to watch).
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will all include further mass ascents, model hot air balloon competitions, another Nightglow with fireworks, fairground entertainment galore and all round family wonderfulness across the whole weekend.
It’s hard to describe the magical feeling of seeing 150 hot air balloons of different shapes and sizes floating above the place you live but it’s pretty unbeatable and one you’ll only ever get here in Bristol. If you only make it one festival this year, make sure it’s this one as there’s just nothing quite like it!
